Two things you absolutely need in business to survive and thrive
Ten months ago, I worked with an online education company as a mentor.
I was supposed to teach the class for the subject of ‘Business Writing’.
It was a part of their ‘Entrepreneurship’ course.
There were 13 students from all over the world.
Few of them were startups, and most of them were in the business for 4-5 years.
The students were not initially motivated because it was about ‘Writing’.
They thought it’s a course with zero real-world applicability just like any other academic course.
They were wrong, but I did not tell them.
I did something that motivated them.
I made them realise the 2 things that are important to survive and thrive in business.
After a few weeks, they were highly interested in the subject.
Not only that, at the end of the course, they ranked my subject the highest and the most important in the entire course.
Even though the course was called ‘Business Writing’ – it was really a course in ad writing and communication.
Each week I gave assignments.
“Assume you’re writing an email to a client and XYZ has gone wrong. How do you write an email that delivers this bad news w/o upsetting the client?”
Then they were graded.
I deleted their copies.
“Assume you’re writing to XYZ CEO and you want to get him/her on a call – what do you say?”
“Imagine you are asked by a Managing Director of a Multinational company to write about your product in only 10 lines, what will you write?”
“You have selected an employee. She is perfect for your team, but she has got another offer with a higher salary. How will you convince her to join your team with the salary lower than another employer?”
“Write a ‘Two Page Long Advert’ of your product.”
And many more….
Then they were graded.
Over and over again.
Week in, week out.
The process was quite demanding.
But at the end of 3 months…
They saw just how much their writing improved…
Their thoughts were transformed.
They became more ‘EMPATHETIC’ with others.
No college, university or so-called education institutes are doing it.
They all agreed the course was one of the most valuable courses they took in any biz school.
And here’s why:
Regardless of what your goals are…
Regardless of what you want to achieve…
Regardless of what you want to make happen…
You’re going to have to talk to other human beings.
You’re going to have to learn how to see things from another’s point of view.
You’re going to have to learn how to analyse and solve another’s problem.
You’re going to have to learn how to deliver bad news.
You’re going to have to learn how to persuade and influence people.
It has nothing to do with becoming a marketer, salesperson or business person.
It has everything to do with making your dreams come true.
Because when it boils down to it, there are only 2 things that determine whether or not you achieve your dreams (regardless of what they are):
- Talent/work ethic
- Your ability to persuade people
So it doesn’t matter if you want to learn how to write marketing and sales promotions…
… if you want to learn how to write that gets people to read your resumes and call you for an interview…
… or if you just want more responses from people you want to connect with.
It’s all contingent on your marketing skills (and that’s why EVERYONE needs to learn how to write a killer offer – including 80-year-old grandma).
