Why being hungry for information is probably not too good for you?
A few weeks ago, I met one of my students who attended my workshop three years ago. We decided to have a coffee together at a café. I asked him about the progress in his life and business.
He did not share much about the development in his business. Instead of sharing his developmental talk he was talking about the books he read and workshops he attended since then. He also shared the names of some books on his wish list and the seminars he is determined to attend. As far as I know, he is a good learner. He knows many things that we wish we can know.
I again asked about the development of his life and business. This time, he realized that he hasn’t got the appropriate answer and said that the business is not as good as it should be.
“You have a huge amount of information to get what you want,
still what’s stopping you?”
He was speechless.
Here, you can understand that he has become what we can call ‘Information junkie’. We have seen such people who constantly seek for more information. They are never satisfied with the information.
I wholeheartedly agree with reading books, attending workshops and know as much as we can. We must learn new things in order to be more powerful and productive. Sometimes it’s not a good idea to seek for information as an excuse to escape from the work we require to do.
So, what should we know and what shouldn’t know???
First of all, why people are seeking for more information?
Two possible reasons…..
1. They think they must know THAT SECRET to change their life.
2. They get distracted instead of doing what is necessary to do.
People seek for THAT SECRET information they are missing. They go to one book to another, one seminar to another or one website to another just to find that secret they need to know. In this era of internet, it’s too easy to get distracted.
Why people keep checking their messages on ‘whatsapp’ or ‘facebook’?? Because they think that they will find the information they really need. ‘
But guess what happens? They can never be satisfied with the information. Check out the cool blogs. They can effortlessly distract you.
Some of the catchy headlines I found that can easily distract you from your regular work.
“Find out how a guy from footpath became a millionaire in just one month?”
“The secret of getting 100’s of clients that nobody wants you to know”
“How I made $10,000 overnight without doing anything? Here’s how….”
“A lady shares her secret of losing 5 kgs in just one week without any diet.”
“The ultimate secret of using the power of your mind to get anything you want.”
“The recipe of ‘McDonald’s’ leaked. Read now before the web page gets banned.”
As soon as you look at such attractive headline, you will want to read them because we think that we should learn or know such interesting things and help us to get what we want EASILY. Some information provides entertaining value.
Here’s an important lesson:
You don’t need to know everything about anything. You just need to know what you really need to know to get your things done.
There are millions of web pages, articles, books, video programs etc. to feed tons of information to you. That information is of no use if you don’t have time and energy to implement.
Sometimes, people seek for information because they want to escape from doing what is required.
Steven Pressfield, who is an author of a book ‘The War of Art’ said, “The more important something is, the more and more we often resist doing it.”
We postpone doing important things because we believe that we need more information to complete our work. Even if the information is workable, you won’t implement because you will still want to know even better information.
The more we know, the more we want to know. This vicious cycle of knowing without doing continues and we become unproductive.
Remember: You need to know what you JUST NEED TO KNOW to get your things done.
You can never be perfect. You need some time to understand the information fully. You need to put your knowledge into practice to make it useful.
Jim Rohn said, “Don’t let your learning lead to knowledge… You’ll be a fool. Let your learning lead to ACTION and you’ll be rich! “
Here’s a summary:
- “You have a huge amount of information to get what you want, still what’s stopping you?”
- You don’t need to know everything about anything. You just need to know what you really need to know to get your things done.
Here’s a task for you:
- What knowledge you have that you can implement now and create more powerful results.
- What information can you implement now to make a positive impact in your life and business?
